Anderson County Mourns the Tragic Passing of Steve McAllister

Anderson County, – It is with heavy hearts that we report the untimely passing of Steve McAllister, the esteemed owner of McAllister Greenhouses, Inc., a cherished retail garden center in Anderson County. Steve’s journey came to a heartbreaking end several weeks after a devastating car accident that occurred on Friday, August 25, 2023.

A Desperate Battle for Survival

Following the accident, Steve was swiftly transported to CMC Main, where a team of dedicated medical professionals initiated a life-saving emergency operation. His injuries were severe, requiring multiple surgeries and an extended stay in intensive care. To support his respiration, a breathing tube was inserted, and he was periodically awakened from sedation to assess his neurological condition.

Remarkably, during these moments of consciousness, Steve exhibited signs of responsiveness. He displayed the ability to move all his fingers and toes and even communicated through nods. However, he remained heavily sedated and reliant on a ventilator for breathing assistance.

Hope Flickers Amidst Adversity

On August 31st, Steve underwent another round of medical procedures, including a bronchoscopy, adjustments to sedation, and modifications to his ventilator settings. Additionally, a chest tube was inserted to manage his condition. Following a night of rest, both his oxygen levels and breathing showed improvement, sparking hope within his family.

The medical team identified an inflammatory response in Steve’s respiratory system, possibly linked to the surgery on his femur. Despite the hurdles, the family remained optimistic. A CT scan revealed minor bleeding near his liver and spleen, among other concerns. In the days leading up to his passing, doctors attempted interventions to prevent further complications, including bleeding and clot formation in the lungs, requiring frequent bronchoscopy procedures.

A Heartfelt Farewell

Steve McAllister’s daughter, Lindsey VanHoose, took to Facebook to share the somber news:

“Daddy went home to be with Jesus last night. He went very peacefully and comfortably, surrounded by his people and immeasurable amounts of love. If you know him, you know the sadness is only for us. He is healthy, whole and enjoying the presence of his Savior he served so well. Thank you all for all of your love and support for our family. We have been so blessed by my dad and all those who love him.”

A Struggle Against the Odds

Steve McAllister’s medical care involved Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventilator support, antibiotics, and various medications. Despite the unwavering efforts of medical professionals and the immense support of his family, Steve’s condition continued to deteriorate, and recovery remained elusive.

A Legacy Lives On

The McAllister family expresses their deep gratitude for the countless efforts and prayers extended during Steve McAllister’s hospitalization. His memory will forever be cherished by those who knew and loved him, and his legacy as the owner of McAllister Greenhouses, Inc. will continue to thrive in the hearts of the community he served so well.
