Remembering Rick Schiffhauer – A Life of Integrity and Passion

Rochester, NY – With heavy hearts, the community mourns the passing of Richard “Rick” Schiffhauer, a beloved local business owner, who courageously battled pancreatic cancer. He peacefully departed on August 1, 2023, surrounded by his loving wife Karen and cherished family. Rick was 60 years old and leaves behind a legacy of integrity, action, and faith.

A Life Filled with Sports and Entrepreneurship

Born to Angela and Robert Schiffhauer in Rochester, Rick grew up in the city’s 10th Ward, where he forged lifelong friendships and values. An avid sports enthusiast, he excelled in football, lacrosse, and softball during his youth. Entrepreneurial spirit ran in his veins, as he owned his first business – a corner store and deli – in his early twenties. Rick’s educational journey led him to Rochester Institute of Technology.

Building Businesses and Finding Love

Rick’s entrepreneurial prowess continued, and he co-owned the renowned Rochester Athletic Club with his brothers and other partners. Fate smiled upon him in 2002 when he met Karen Larzelere, who eventually became his life partner. They married after a beautiful journey and became inseparable.

Creating a Legacy – Smash It Sports

In 2012, Rick pursued his dream of establishing a softball and baseball-focused business. Smash It Sports was born, initially operating from the couple’s basement. However, the business rapidly flourished, expanding nationwide with retail representatives. Rick’s dedication and hard work made Smash It Sports a resounding success.

Family – The Source of His Happiness

Rick’s greatest joys were his family – his wife Karen, their children, and grandchildren. Football Sundays, trips to Big East tournaments with friends and sons, and visits to the Saratoga Racetrack were highlights of his life. He coached his daughters’ softball teams and was their biggest fan, cheering them on even during his cancer battle. Rick’s love for the sport extended to young players, as he volunteered as a coach for the Greece Little League.

A Fighter’s Spirit and Message of Hope

In 2021, Rick was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer. Fueled by optimism and determination, he and Karen became active fundraisers for the Seena Magowitz Foundation, working to spread hope to fellow cancer patients and their families. Rick’s courageous journey was shared publicly in interviews, touching many hearts.

Cherished Memories and Farewell

Rick Schiffhauer is survived by his adoring wife Karen; his children Matt, Alyssa, Erin, Rickie, Riley, and Kendall; and his treasured grandchildren MacKenzie, Ethan, and James. He leaves behind brothers Robert and John Schiffhauer, as well as beloved uncles, nephews, nieces, and a vast circle of friends.
