Funeral Service with Honors at Wiles Chapel

A service with full honors will be held to pay tribute to Lieutenant Michael C. Wood’s service and sacrifice. The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 31, at Wiles Chapel, located on the Newberry College campus. Lieutenant Wood was a distinguished alumnus of Newberry College, graduating in 1998, and had been a key member of the Wolves football team during his college years.

Friends, colleagues, and members of the community will have an opportunity to offer their condolences and support to the grieving family. A visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday at McSwain-Evans Funeral Home, located at 1721 Saunders St., in Newberry. A Tragic Accident Claims a Hero

On the day of the accident, Lieutenant Wood was responding to a call when his police vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Nance Street and SC-34 around 5:40 p.m. He was immediately rushed to Prisma Health Richland for medical treatment, but sadly, he succumbed to his injuries.

Lieutenant Michael C. Wood leaves behind his beloved wife and two sons, as well as his mother, brother, father, and mother-in-law, and numerous extended family members. The entire Newberry community stands in solidarity with the family during this painful time of grief and loss.
