Hillcrest High School Shooting, Student Shot Dead While Leaving Homecoming Football Game

COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, Ill. – A Community Mourns

Country Club Hills, Illinois – The joyful night following a homecoming football game at Hillcrest High School in Chicago’s southern suburbs turned into a nightmare when 14-year-old Marshawn Mitchell was shot and killed as he left the event. His grief-stricken mother, Amanda Lenore, struggled to find solace in the aftermath of this senseless tragedy.

A Mother’s Unbearable Pain

“They took my baby from me,” Amanda Lenore said, her voice trembling with grief.

The incident unfolded around 9 p.m. on a Friday night, just after the football game had concluded. According to investigators, officers were dispersing a large crowd along 175th Street when an unidentified assailant opened fire on the unsuspecting gathering.

A Promising Life Cut Short

Marshawn Mitchell, a new freshman at Hillcrest High School, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family devastated. Tina Thomas, the victim’s aunt, shared her pain: “It was her only child, the only child she had, so they took everything from her when they took her only child. What just makes it hurt so bad is that he was a good kid. He didn’t belong to a gang. He was at school.”

Community and School React

The Hillcrest Hawks football team expressed their sorrow on social media, stating, “We are all saddened by the events that happened tonight after our Homecoming Football Game against Oak Forest… Please pray for our staff and students who have been affected by this unfortunate, senseless act of violence!”

Country Club Hills police continue their investigation, hoping that security cameras at the school will provide crucial leads. In the pursuit of justice, community activist Andrew Holmes has announced a reward of at least $2,000 for any information leading to an arrest.

A Life Full of Dreams

Marshawn Mitchell had recently transferred to Hillcrest High School, seeking a better environment for his education. A gifted athlete, he aspired to play football at Hillcrest and dreamed of one day making it to the NFL, following in the footsteps of his older cousin.

Relatives described him as full of excitement during his brief time at the school. “He was only at the school for four days, and he was so excited about going to the school dance the night that it happened,” Tina Thomas recounted.

A Plea for Justice

In the midst of their overwhelming grief, the family makes an impassioned plea for justice. “If you know something, please come forward and tell the family. Please, help us because he did not deserve this. His mom did not deserve this,” Thomas urged.

The Bremen High School District 228 released a statement, saying, “It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the devastating loss of one of our Hillcrest High School students… Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all those involved in this tragedy.”

As the community comes to terms with this heartbreaking incident, they join together in solidarity, mourning the loss of a young life full of potential and dreams
