17-Year-Old Julio Gomez Dies in a Tragic Car Crash

The tight-knit community of New Milford is grieving the loss of a bright 17-year-old senior, Julio Gomez, who tragically lost his life in a car crash last Friday. Julio’s infectious smile and “down-to-earth” energy left a lasting impression on those who knew him, and his untimely departure has left a void that is deeply felt by friends, classmates, and the entire community.

Remembering Julio Gomez

Julio Gomez’s friends and classmates remember him for his boundless energy and ever-present smile. Lucy Cherniske, a sophomore at New Milford High School, shared her fond memories of Julio, saying, “He always had a lot of energy and a smile.” She was among the students who gathered at New Milford High School for a candlelight vigil held in his honor on Monday evening.

Makayla Hunter-Reis, a junior at New Milford, reflected on her elementary school days in Danbury, where she and Julio were classmates. Later, they attended high school together when Julio transferred to New Milford High School. “He was funny,” Hunter-Reis said. “He loved to dance, and he smiled often.”

A Promising Future Cut Short

Superintendent Janet Parlato shared that Julio Gomez had transferred to New Milford from Danbury two years ago and had quickly become an integral part of the community. He enjoyed attending sports games and spending time with friends. Julio had been eagerly looking forward to his senior year of high school and had aspirations of attending college.

The Tragic Car Crash

The unfortunate incident occurred in front of Italian Mia Restaurant and Pizza, located at 233 Danbury Road, where Julio was a passenger in a three-car crash. The crash also resulted in the hospitalization of three others, including the 17-year-old driver of the car Julio was in.

In the wake of this heartbreaking loss, a small memorial has been set up at the crash site, adorned with flowers, candles, and a balloon as a tribute to Julio Gomez’s memory. The New Milford High School offered grief support services over the weekend and on Monday to students, community members, and first responders affected by the tragedy.

A celebration of Julio Gomez’s life is scheduled for Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Faith Church, located at 600 Danbury Road #1 in New Milford. The Danbury Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Services has posted an obituary, requesting that attendees wear white in Julio’s memory and honor during the celebration. The internment will be a private affair, allowing close family and friends to say their final goodbyes.

Details of the Accident

According to police reports, the 2006 Infiniti G35 in which Julio Gomez was a passenger was traveling north in the right lane on Danbury Road when the driver of a 2022 Hyundai Tucson turned left from the southbound lanes to enter the restaurant.

As New Milford grapples with this heartbreaking loss, the community comes together to support one another and remember the young life that touched so many. Julio Gomez will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, warm smile, and the positive impact he had on those who were fortunate enough to know him.
